tert-Butanol

Cas N0. : 75-65-0 Molecular formula : C4H10O

Tert-butanol, also known as 2-methyl-2-propanol, trimethyl methanol, etc. It is one of the four isomers of butanol (n-butanol, isobutanol, sec-butanol, tert-butanol). It is a colorless crystal with a camphor odor and is liquid in the presence of a small amount of water. Tert-butanol is miscible with water, ethanol and ether, and forms an azeotrope with water. Tert-butanol is more prone to dehydration than primary and secondary alcohols, and it is easy to generate chlorides when shaken with hydrochloric acid.

Production use
It often replaces n-butanol as a solvent for coatings and medicines. Used as an internal combustion engine fuel additive (to prevent carburetor freezing) and an antiknock agent. As an intermediate in organic synthesis and an alkylation raw material for the production of tert-butyl compounds, it can produce methyl methacrylate, tert-butylamine, etc. for the synthesis of drugs and fragrances. Dehydration of tert-butanol can produce isobutene with a purity of 99.0-99.9%. It is used as a solvent for industrial detergents, pharmaceutical extractants, insecticides, solvents for waxes, cellulose esters, solvents for plastics and paints, and also used in the manufacture of denatured alcohol, spices, fruit essence, isobutylene, etc. Solvents and chromatographic reference materials for molecular weight determination.
