Methacrylamide is an organic compound, also known as 2-Methylacrylamide, 2-methyl-2-propenamid, α-acrylamide (α-Methylpropenamide, alpha-Methyl acrylic amide). Methacrylamide is a white crystal at room temperature, and the industrial product is slightly yellow. Soluble in water, soluble in alcohol, dichloromethane, slightly soluble in ether and chloroform, insoluble in petroleum ether and carbon tetrachloride. Methacrylamide can undergo polymerization at high temperature, releasing a lot of heat and easily causing container rupture and explosion accidents. Methacrylamide is flammable in case of open flame and high heat. When it is burned and decomposed, it will release toxic carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides and other nitrogen oxide gases. Methacrylamide is an intermediate in the production of methyl methacrylate.
