Used as organic synthesis intermediates for the production of drugs, etc., pesticides, fragrances, dyes, desiccants, antioxidants and vinyl photosensitive resins, etc. It is also a reagent in the Feist-Benary synthesis for the synthesis of furan ring systems. It was used as a tear gas during World War I.
